StudyOn Privacy Policy
Last updated October 19, 2026
What this covers
StudyOn helps students focus, keep up with homework, and build study habits, and lets parents and teachers a student has linked follow along. This policy explains what the iPhone and Mac apps collect, why, and the choices you have.
We don't sell personal information, show ads, or track you across other companies' apps and websites.
Information we collect
- Account details: your name, email address and account type (student, parent, or teacher). A phone number, if you add one, stays on your device. Passwords are handled by Firebase Authentication and are never visible to us. If you use Sign in with Apple or Google, we receive the name and email the provider shares (Apple may provide a private relay address).
- Study activity: focus sessions (when they started, how long they ran, focus versus off-task time), streaks, study plans, and assignments - titles, courses, due dates and status, including assignments imported from Canvas.
- Websites during focus sessions: when you use the built-in focus browser during a session, the app records the sites you visited and how long you were off task, so your own stats can show where time went. This list stays on your device - your account only stores focus totals.
- Websites and apps on Mac: during a focus session the Mac app checks which app is in front and which website is open in Safari or Chrome, so it can block distractions and count off-task time. Like the list above, this stays on your device.
- Canvas: if you connect Canvas, your Canvas access token is stored in the device keychain and used only to fetch your courses and assignments from your school's Canvas site. When you disconnect Canvas or log out, the app also deletes the access key it created from your Canvas account.
- Calendar: with your permission, the app reads events from Apple Calendar to plan study time around them. Calendar events stay on your device.
- Screen Time and app blocking (iPhone): app blocking uses Apple's Screen Time framework. Apple keeps your app usage on the device - StudyOn never receives which apps you use or for how long. The iPhone website filter checks sites against a list built into the app on your device; your browsing isn't sent to us.
- Focus commitment: if you sign the weekly early-exit commitment, we store the image of your on-screen signature, the date you signed and how many early exits you've used that week with your account, so the limit works on all your devices.
- Notifications: a device token so we can deliver reminders and alerts you've turned on.
- On-device data: your settings, preferences, profile photo, focus questionnaire answers and a local copy of your study data stay on your device.
How we use it
- To run the app and keep your data in sync across your own devices.
- To show your progress to the parents and teachers you have linked, and to apply the blocks and study sessions they send.
- To power AI features you choose to use (see below).
- To send the reminders and alerts you've enabled.
- To respond when you contact us.
AI features
The assignment breakdown, planner and motivation features, and the check that decides whether a website is productive, send the text you enter, assignment details or website names to our server, which forwards them to OpenAI to generate a response. These requests don't include your name, email or account identifiers. OpenAI processes them under its API data-usage policies.
Parents and teachers
A parent or teacher is linked when the student accepts their invite link or gives them the student's invite code. Once linked, they can see the student's assignments, focus sessions and streaks. Parents can also see which websites pulled the student off task during a focus session (the site name and for how long), block apps and websites on the student's phone, and start study sessions for them. Teachers can invite students to study sessions and add websites to block during them. On iPhone, a parent can approve StudyOn through Apple's Family Sharing so its controls can't be switched off without them. Either side can remove the link at any time.
Who we share data with
- Firebase (Google): sign-in and the database that stores your account and study data, hosted on Google Cloud.
- Vercel: hosts the StudyOn server that handles AI requests.
- OpenAI: generates responses for the AI features, as described above.
- Canvas (your school): only when you connect it, and only to read your courses and assignments.
- Apple: Sign in with Apple, push notifications and Screen Time, under Apple's own privacy terms.
- We share data with no one else, and never for advertising.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your data for as long as your account exists. Delete Account in Settings removes your profile, study data and the account itself from our servers. Logging out removes the copy on that device, and disconnecting Canvas removes the stored token.
Children
StudyOn is intended for students aged 13 and older. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without a parent's consent. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we'll delete it.
Security
Data travels over encrypted connections, sign-in is handled by Firebase Authentication, and Canvas tokens are kept in the device keychain. No method of storage is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
Your choices
- Profile → Linked accounts shows who is linked to you, and you can unlink them there.
- Calendar, Screen Time and notification access can be changed any time in iOS or macOS settings.
- You can unlink a parent, teacher or student, log out, or delete your account from Settings.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top and, for significant changes, let you know in the app.
